May 30, 2019 PRINCIPALLY SPEAKING "Summer, summer, summertime; Time to sit back and unwind..." -DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince
I cannot believe how fast this year has flown by. It's a bit of a cliché', but it is absolutely the truth. It doesn't seem that long ago we were welcoming kids to a new school year, and now we're saying goodbye. It is truly amazing how much has been achieved by the children, staff, and parents in one year. The achievements extend from the academic to the creative arts and to the numerous fun and philanthropic efforts of our community. We achieve so much because we work together as a team, and this is one of the greatest strengths of the school.
My hope is everyone has a chance to get away, unplug and spend massive amounts of time with your family. Aside from our annual Port A trip, my crew will be keeping our summer local and enjoying every single day.
As you know the summer months afford so many enrichment opportunities for children. They also allow our students to fall victim to the "Summer Slide". This is the tendency for students to lose some of the achievement gains they made during the previous school year. Naturally, we wish to avoid this from happening to our Falcons. A staff member passed on the following article on the importance of reading, and it offers some interesting points to consider. Among them, aside from avoiding the slide and just good practice, the study shows reading ALOUD was significantly beneficial to children and their parents. Additionally, there is an SEL component to reading with your children. Parents were assessed as well as their kids, and reading aloud appeared to strengthen parents' feelings of competence, improve the quality of their relationships with their children and even reduce parental stress or depression.
Lastly, I would like to extend a massive heartfelt thank you to Leslie Odom, Amberlee Cantrell, Kelly Inmon, Shannon DeLeon and Kelly Dunning! They are the movers and shakers that have made student and staff character rocks possible this year. Thank you all for your time and efforts in securing these for us!
Have a great summer!
