WHY I GIVE TO EEF by Heather Sheffield

Hi! My name is Heather Sheffield. I'm a public education and dyslexia advocate but more importantly, I'm a mom to a 4th grader at FTE and a 6th grader at WRMS.

We moved from a district in the Houston area that should have been receiving money from the state due to having a large percentage of students in poverty and English learners but instead, they gave over $80 million dollars back to the state via recapture our last year there. It was my experience in that district that highlighted the need for school finance reform and made me appreciate education foundations. When we moved to Austin, I saw the amazing things that the Eanes Education Foundation does for our kids by providing teachers to help try to bridge the gap and I knew I needed to get involved and DONATE!

Despite our Eanes ISD taxes being at one of the lowest rates in Central Texas, we all pay high property taxes...but approximately 66% of those taxes will never make it back to our schools or district. This year, Eanes ISD will write checks back to the state totaling over $100 million dollars for recapture payments. Since recapture started, our district has given the state over a BILLION dollars. This might be ok if this money was actually going to other less fortunate districts like the one we moved from but unfortunately, that isn't the case anymore. The money goes straight into the state's general fund and isn't earmarked specifically for public education. On top of that, our legislators have continued to lower the amount of money they add to the budget to fund public education every session while they continue to pass unfunded mandates for districts all while charter schools continue to ask for more money too.

Thankfully, in Eanes ISD, we have engaged parents that vote for pro-public education friendly candidates, the group Eanes Advocates who fights for our district at the Capitol and the Eanes Education Foundation to fund the gap between what the state considers an adequate allotment per student and what we, as parents who moved to Eanes for the amazing schools, know it costs to properly educate our children.

It is up to us, the parents to vote, demand action from our legislators this session and to fund teachers in the meantime via EEF. Every donation, no matter the amount, is appreciated. Please donate to EEF today (and go vote)!

The sock fairy will be dropping in to reward the teacher with the most collected socks! So, keep those sock donations coming in! Please help put socks on the feet of our local homeless community.  A warm pair of socks can warm someone's heart!

Old/Used/New College T-Shirts Needed:
My niece, Lindsey Etter, is a first year teacher at Barbara Bush Middle School in Farmers Branch/Carrolton, Texas. Every Wednesday they have, "Wear Your Favorite College T-Shirt Day" to promote college preparation. Sadly, most students can't afford a shirt. Our wonderful FTE staff has donated 25 shirts, but there are 1000 students, so I'm trying to collect as many as possible. If you have a college t-shirt you could donate, please send it with your student or drop it by my office.

Thank you in advance for your help with this!

Kinder – 1st Grade = choose 2 courses (based on availability)
                                2nd – 5th Grade = choose 3 courses (based on availability)
4.These courses will be added to your cart for 10 minutes. After that time, your course selection will not be on hold for you.  You MUST 'check out' in order to reserve your child's spot in the selected class.  (There is no cost, but you will receive a confirmation email.)
