FTE TRAIL BLAZER

January 18, 2017  Revision

Forest Trail Elementary

PRINCIPALLY SPEAKING

Well, that was exciting!

While it wasn't "snow", I hope everyone was able to find the perks of some wintery weather.  On Tuesday, my children joined the neighborhood bobsled team and set records shooting down driveways and hills.  You will not see them in PyeongChang for the Winter Olympics, but it was fun.

Last Friday, I asked everyone to wear green in support of our friend, Parker.  Parker continues to receive positive reports and is on his way towards recovery.  Coping with serious illnesses can be a tough and scary proposition for children and parents alike.  I would like to offer a few suggestions provided to me by Dell Child Life representatives regarding how to address concerns with your child.  Additionally, Nebraska Medicine has provided this brochure to help answer questions children may have.

1)      Answer the questions asked:  Avoid the temptation to over-explain.  Often times adults, with the best of intentions at heart, have a tendency to overshare.  The main message of understanding and security can become lost when the need of the child to understand is replaced by the need of an adult to explain.

2)      Begin your discussion with "Tell me what you know."  When involved in a discussion with your child, defer to them to establish a baseline in order to tailor your information.  Many children overhear information and/or compare notes on the bus or in the hall thus creating a game of telephone that creates misinformation and confusion.

3)      Give your child a job:  All kids want to be industrious and connected.  A student away from school is striving for normalcy and would love to be back in the classroom.  Students in class are often curious about a classmate and want to make sure all is well.  If your child asks for a way to help, put them to work through get well cards, pictures to hang up a recovery room or even a video message that could be emailed.

FTE OPEN HOUSE – THURSDAY, JANUARY 25th

Please mark Thursday, January 25th, on your calendar and plan to join us for our school's annual Open House and Science Fair to be held between 5:30 and 7:00 P.M.

Our budding scientists will have their work products on display from the Science Fair in our school's library.  Even if your child did not participate in the event this year, visiting the fair is a great way to gain information for those who may wish to enter in the future or simply learn more about the scientific process.  It is requested that projects be taken home that evening in order for our library to resume normal operations the following day.

Though many of you have been here frequently, don't underestimate how important this evening is for your children. Your taking the time to see where your child spends the majority of his/her days during the week is very significant.  The children are very proud of their accomplishments here at school and get great pleasure in sharing their experiences with you and other significant people in their lives.

As always, parking will be at a premium.  Please come together as a family and/or with friends to reduce congestion.
